The tensioner on a ford bantam does not have a 'tab'that needs to be released. The tensioner is spring loaded. I had to same problem on my bantam 1.3i (08 model). When I removed the tappet cover I found that the tensioner was intact. The front chain guide (usually the yellow / cream in colour one) was broken lower down towards the crankshaft sprocket. Using my hand i was able to move it around to show the free play and also lift it out the engine.

I assume the rattling you have is quite bad (a loud ticking noise) sounds like a rowdy diesel engine or like every single tappet is making noise all at once. This engine has hydraulic lifters. When I removed my timing chain guides and tensioner and compared the timing chain itself to the new replacement i found that the chain had also stretched a bit as compared to the new one. I did make a video of my situation, so let me know if you need it, will try and upload on this site. When the chain breaks the cam shaft stops moving and the valves stay in their last position. The pistons continue to move until the engine comes to a stop. An open valve can be hit by a piston, sometimes breaking the valve or just bending the shaft.

Also you have to be sure the new chain has the cam shaft and crank shaft properly timed. As I understand that that engine does not have timing marks on the chain sprockets. To test for damaged valves, remove the spark plugs and test the compression in each cylinder by cranking the engine while holding the compression gage in the spark plug hole. All the cylinder should have the same pressure within about 15 psi. A cylinder with damaged valves will not have any compression pressure.

If you are unsure about the valve timing check into how that engine is timed. I don't have that information but if is out of time it has a very major effect on the engine performance and idle.

I want you to let me know if the solution(s) suggested were of any value. Constructive criticism is welcomed. Hi, I'm Ben and - hopefully - I can provide some meaningful assistance. I'm not certain that I fully understand your problem. Therefore, I'm probably provide more information than you'll need. Discussion: A timing chain tensioner for your quest will cost $59-$75. The tensioner sits behind a small cover on the front of the engine.

It;s difficult to reach but the replacement should take no more than 2 hours. Move power steering and coolant/antifreeze resevoirs out of the way for access.

You may have to use a c-clamp to hold the guide and chain up out of the way. The difficult part is installing the tensioner without pulling the plunger stopper pin. The following link is a tutorial on how to replace the chain, guide and tensioner and covers everything in far more detail than I'm permitted here. The following video should be of some additional assistance. Posted on May 31, 2012.
